He also quietly reduced purchased hay by thirty percent because cattle were meeting more nutritional needs from wheat pasture in fall and early winter, arriving at dry lot in better condition, and requiring less supplement to maintain through the rest of winter. Dale Crowley sent three customers to Willa for consultation.

He never apologized exactly.

In spring 2024, Willa was invited to speak at the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers annual meeting in Salina.

She drove up in Gene’s truck because her own needed brakes. She wore a clean button-down, boots, and the same practical expression she had worn at the Hendrix fence line when Dale laughed from the road. The conference room held 340 wheat farmers from across the state.

Willa stood at the podium and walked through four years of data from the Hassell farm and the fourteen Pottawatomie County operations that had adopted the system.

She showed per-acre revenue comparisons.

Cattle gains.

Risk reduction through enterprise diversification.

She showed the numbers quietly and without drama, the way numbers deserve to be shown, letting arithmetic make the argument.

Halfway through, she saw Gene in the fourth row.

She had not known he was coming.

When she finished, the room applauded.

Gene stood.

In fall 2024, Willa’s younger brother Cody returned to the home place after two years working on a ranch in the Flint Hills.

Cody was twenty, sun-browned, restless, and newly serious in a way that happens when young men spend enough time away from home to realize both what they have left and what they have learned. He came home in September and helped with wheat planting.

One evening at the kitchen table, he placed a folder in front of Willa and Gene.

“I’ve been reading about mob grazing,” he said.

Gene looked at the folder.

Willa looked at Cody.

Cody explained: ultra-high-density, short-duration grazing using temporary electric fence, moving cattle through small paddocks with long rest periods between grazings. Research showed potential improvements in soil organic matter, water infiltration, and perennial grass productivity over time. He had been looking at whether it could work on the Hassell native pasture ground as a complement to Willa’s wheat grazing system.

Gene picked up the folder, but did not open it yet.

He looked at Willa.

Willa looked at the folder.

She thought about a gray October morning in 2019. Dale Crowley laughing from a truck window. A kitchen table and a manila folder. Her father saying, I need to think about it. Her father later saying, You decide the rotation. She thought about what it had cost her to be right, what it would have cost if she had been wrong, and what it had cost the farm when nobody had been willing to try anything new.

All of that passed through her in about four seconds.

Then she said, “Show me the data.”

Cody pushed the folder across the table.

Gene picked up his coffee.

The kitchen remained a kitchen in the way kitchens do when the important things have already been decided and everyone at the table knows it.

Willa Hassell still farms the home place in Pottawatomie County.

The spiral notebook from 2019 sits on a shelf in the mudroom beside Gene’s thirty years of yield records. She has started new notebooks now. One holds the formal trial data. Another tracks county adoption numbers. A third begins with Cody’s calculations on mob grazing the native pasture ground.

At the top of each first page, Willa writes three things: the date, the acreage, and the question she is trying to answer.
